“If you were to throw gasoline on a fire that’s already burning, that fire would grow really rapidly, really quickly. “Being hurricane season prepared also means being compassionate and kind to yourself during times of hardship,” NOLA Ready, the city’s emergency preparedness campaign, advised in a post on Instagram. Ms. Sibley, an administrative assistant and Ms. Ozane’s sister, has tried to save money to help with riding out hurricanes only for other demands to interfere with that. “What am I going to do if a hurricane really comes?” she said. “I pray we don’t have a bad one this year,” Ms. Sibley said.

The water temperature near Key Biscayne, a barrier island just east of Miami, had already passed 89 degrees one morning this week. And though the ocean off South Florida was slightly cooler than the recent record highs that had stunned scientists and threatened marine life, it remained phenomenally hot. But on this serene patch of the Atlantic Coast, it was still a summer day at the beach, when nothing satisfies quite like a dip — even when the ocean feels like a thick, simmering syrup. “I like it warm,” shrugged Niki Candela, 20, a Miami native, moments after a powerful siren warned of approaching lightning. The shallow water was a crystalline teal, rolling oh so gently, not a cresting wave in sight.

DeSantis wouldn't comment on Trump when asked about him during a press conference in Key Biscayne. When reminded Trump was a Florida resident, DeSantis shot back: "I also got 22 million others." Trump has been living in Palm Beach, Florida, at Mar-a-Lago, his home and private club, since leaving the White House. The criticism starting even before Election Day, when Trump nicknamed DeSantis "Ron DeSanctimonious," and said DeSantis should show more gratefulness after Trump supported DeSantis for governor in 2018, rocketing him to the GOP nomination. Reporters haven't asked DeSantis about the dinner in the two press conferences he held in Florida this week, but other prominent Republicans, including potential 2024 rivals, have condemned the meeting.
Five out every 100,000 people in the U.S. were hospitalized with the flu during the week ending Nov. 5, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That's the highest hospitalization rate this early in the flu season since 2010, more than 10 years ago. Flu hospitalizations have surged to a decade high in the U.S. with the Southeast the hardest region right now. Flu activity is also very high in Arkansas, Louisiana, Maryland, New Mexico, New Jersey, New York City and Texas, according to the CDC. "There are also early signs of influenza causing severe illness in precisely these two groups of individuals this season," Romero told reporters during a call earlier this month.
Soman Chainani Creates Complex Fantasy Tales

Growing up as a gay Indian kid on the posh island of Key Biscayne, Fla., outside of Miami, Soman Chainani sensed he didn’t fit in. He felt alien among his mostly white peers, and overlooked by the Disney films he watched until he knew every frame. “I remember not seeing myself in anything,” he says over video from his home in Manhattan. He found in the grisly yarns of Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm a more nuanced appreciation of good, evil, luck and hubris. “I realized that fairy tales were meant to do something other than engender jealousy or resentment in those of us who don’t get the happy ending,” he says.
